The Iowa Nurse Innovators Pitch Competition recently brought together nurses from across Iowa to showcase ideas aimed at transforming healthcare. The event provided a platform for nurse innovators to pitch their ideas for the chance to win up to $20,000 in funding to develop their solutions.

Meet the Winners

Two nurses tied for first place, each earning $20,000 to move their ideas forward:

  • Jill Droste | Droste Drape: The Droste Drape addresses the lack of protection for operating room (OR) bed bases from fluids and foreign matter. The wrap-around cover for OR bed bases features an absorbent layer for fluid management and a design that eliminates trip hazards while streamlining cleanup to save time during turnover.

  • Janel Williams | Double Under Buttocks Drape: The Double Under Buttocks Drape aims to allow for early intervention to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality related to hemorrhage. The drape will be used during delivery and early postpartum to  improve the precision of blood loss measurement during delivery.

Third Place

Taking home third place and a $10,000 prize was:

  • Kayla Piplani | StomaCoach: StomaCoach aims to use CT/MRI scans to 3D print the abdomens of patients with ostomies, enabling nurses and caregivers to practice pouching and address issues without repeatedly applying bags to fragile skin.

Honorable Mentions

Two teams received honorable mentions, each earning $2,000 to further their projects:

  • Lynnette Kenne | Pediatric Hearing Aid Hat: The Pediatric Hearing Aid Hat provides a secure way for infants and toddlers to keep their hearing aids in place, preventing loss and promoting consistent use.

  • Davis County Hospitals and Clinics Team | Rescue Restraint System: The Rescue Restraint aims to enhance safety for both staff and patients during the restraint of combative individuals.

Innovation in Action

This year’s pitch competition showcased the creativity and problem-solving spirit of the nursing profession. From improving surgical workflows to enhancing patient safety, the presented innovations exemplify the potential of nurse-led ideas.

The Iowa Nurse Innovators program continues to empower nurses with the tools, guidance, and funding to turn their ideas into impactful solutions. These innovations not only enhance patient outcomes but also improve workplace efficiency and staff satisfaction, underscoring the profound contributions of nurses to healthcare innovation.

Stay tuned for updates on these projects as they move closer to implementation and begin shaping the future of care.
